4 great big fat stars. This was so good. Now I’m getting it-why Karen White books are always on waitlist at the library and why the reviews are so positive. This is a G O O D book. The plot is so spooky and twisty in this one. Mellie has moved her single, pregnant self out of her mom’s house and back to Tradd Street; where she keeps hearing a baby crying. Then the body of a newborn is found in the foundation of her house-yes, another renovation project gone awry. Who is the baby? Who is the scary ghost? Will Mellie be able to figure it all out before she gives birth? There are so many secrets revealed in the plot: about the past, the ownership of the Tradd Street house, new characters that could have bad intentions, old characters that are still asshats, and a christening gown. Plus dogs! I had to reread several sections a few times to ‘get it’ on the details but so worth it. I literally cannot reveal anything about the plot because it is chock full of clues that kept me reading way late to see how it ends; and it ends very well. There were also a couple of places that were genuinely spook city-the blurb said malevolent and, yep, totally creepy. I liked this book and have the rest of the series on hold at the library.
