Haunting and Homicide by Ava Burke

Three stars for a fun start to a new paranormal cozy series.  A ‘ghost tour’ guide in NEW ORLEANS, that can also SEE GHOSTS!!! Add in our intrepid heroine finding the body of a rival tour operator (with whom she had ‘words’ (as one does in a cozy mystery!) and you know I was all over this one, dear reader.

The characters are believable and “Lou” is very well done with backstory and motivation.  The plotting was good and the story moved along quickly with only a few slow spots.  I had to go back a few times to make sure I understood some of the clues; as always, I blamed my lack of attention and NOT the author.

New Orleans is very well represented with lots of details and just enough spooky stuff to make the characters interesting and move the plot along but didn’t try to make it just another over-the-top, unbelievable scare fest. If that makes sense (and it doesn’t!), but I enjoyed it because the author stuck to the basic cozy paranormal formula and told a good story. It checked all my boxes for characters, overall plot, and cohesive & coherent storytelling; I can’t wait to read more. I was given a copy to read/share my thoughts.
