DEVELOPING TALENTS by Dr. Temple Grandin & Kate Duffy

Developing Talents by Dr. Temple Grandin and Kate Duffy.  4 stars.  I liked this book.  Very informative while also readable. If you are a parent or caregiver of a person with autism-this is a great place to start.  Explains things in a way that makes sense without overwhelming.    The book uses a lot of lists and tables to break down everything from before the job search starts to succeeding and excelling as an employee. The definitions and explanations of terms are given in plain/easily understood wording. It reads like Dr. Grandin is sitting there with you explaining what’s going on and how to go step by step.  I was given a copy-this is my own opinion.

As the parent of a child diagnosed with autism, I have long grown familiar with navigating all the different labyrinths to get him access to even the most basic services.  Over the years I have figured out medical, legal, education, social, and personal care systems.  Now that he is an adult I am adding employment to my knowledge base.

Dr. Temple Grandin and Kate Duffy have written a very good primer that gives an overview of things we need to know and some available services.  The step-by-step lists and examples make Developing Talents easy to read and easy to relate to your particular situation.  As always, I object to the notion of schools being helpful; in our personal experience, they intentionally made things more difficult; I hope your journey was more supportive.

I highly recommend this book as a first step to helping your person find the job opportunity that makes their heart sing.
